Men's U-17 and U-20 World Cups 2021 postponed by FIFA

The Bureau of the FIFA Council has taken a decision on December 28 to cancel the 2021 editions of men's U-20 and U-17 World Cups due to the ongoing pandemic.They came to a conclusion that the global conditions are not yet normalized to a sufficient level for the World Cups to be started. Further. they have also decided to give the hosting rights for the 2023 editions to Indonesia and Peru.

Qatar to host 2030 edition of Asian Games, Saudi Arabia set for 2034

The Olympic Council of Asia has announced on December 16, 2020, that the 2030 Asian Games will be hosted by Qatar, in it's capital, Doha. However, the 2034 edition will be hosted by Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. This decision was based on votes that took place due to the political dispute between the two countries. Qatar has beaten Saudi Arabia in the vote at the general assembly of Olympic Council of Asia held online in Muscat, Oman on December 15.

Indian men’s hockey team to rank on 4th position, women on 9th in FIH rankings

The Indian men and women hockey teams are going to finish 2020 on 4th and 9th positions, respectively. The International Hockey Federation (FIH)  on December 21, confirmed that the Belgium men’s team and the Netherland Women’s team will finish at the top of world ranking this year.

Cologne Boxing World Cup : Indian boxers won nine medals

Indian boxers have won nine medals including three gold, four bronze and two silver at Cologne Boxing World Cup concluded on December 19, 2020. The World Cup was held in Koln, Germany. Manisha Moun, Amit Panghal, and Simranjit Kaur are the names of the gold medal winners as Indian boxers.

Team India breaks it's own record of the lowest test match score 

Team India's collapse from 9/1 to 36/9, that too within the span of 15 overs has set several records on Saturday, 19 December. This is now the lowest test match score (36) for team India. Their previous lowest total was 42, all out in the Lord's test against England in 1974. None of the Indian batsman could manage to score in double figures . Australia was given the target of 90 runs, which they managed to score and go up 1-0 in the 4 match series.

Russia banned from using it’s name, flag for the next two Olympics

Russia, on Thursday, has been banned from using it’s name, flag and anthem at the next two Olympics or any World Championship for the next two years. The Court of Arbitration has taken this decision. However, Russian athletes and  teams will be allowed to compete in the upcoming events as “Neutral Player” or “Neutral Teams”. Russian authorities were accused for tampering Moscow’s testing laboratory database before handing it over to WADA investigators in 2019.

India pledges 1 million USD to WADA for scientific research for Clean Sport Globally

India has pledged to contribute a sum of $1 million to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) with regard to its scientific research budget to ensure an atmosphere of Clean Sport Globally. This contribution will allow WADA to develop innovative anti-doping testing and detection methods and help to strengthen WADA’s independent Investigation and Intelligence Department.

India’s contribution is the highest among contributions made by other countries including China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Robert Lewandowski wins FIFA best men’s player award

The Poland captain, Robert Lewandowski won the FIFA Best Men’s Player award for 2020 on December 17. This is his career’s biggest prize as an individual. Robert has been one of the integral parts of the German team, having contributed to Bayern’s 2020 success in local and international campaigns.  The Best FIFA Football Awards 2020 ceremony was virtually held in Zurich, Switzerland, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino gave him the trophy in person.  

Yogasana recognized as a competitive sport formally

The Ministry of AYUSH and Sports announced on December 17, that Yogasana would now be recognized as a competitive sport. Sports Minister Kiren Rijju and AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik discussed the benefits of Yoga competitions while addressing a virtual press conference in Delhi.

According to Naik, after 2-3 years of consultations with the Yoga sector, the centre took this decision of recognizing  Yogasana as a competitive sport calling it ‘an integral component of Yoga’.

Anshu Malik grabs silver, India’s first medal at individual World Cup

Anshu Malik, promising Indian wrestler, won India’s first medal at the ongoing Individual World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia.  She won a silver. Anshu defeated Alyona Kolesnik of Azerbaijan 4-2 in the qualification round, then won against Laura Mertens of Germany 3-1 in the quarters.  In the semifinal, she defeated Veronika Chumikova of Russia 7-4. Unfortunately, she lost to European champion Anastasia Nichita of Moldova 5-1 in the 57 kg women’s freestyle final

1000 Khelo India Centres to be started by the Government 

An announcement has been made on December 8, 2020 by the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Kiren Rijju that the Government is going to start 1000 Khelo India centres all over the country. This initiative is taken to help retired sportspersons get employment as well as to encourage sports culture in India.

Ankita Raina wins ITF Doubles title

One of the best Indian tennis players, Ankita Raina won her third doubles title by claiming the ITF Doubles title along with Ekaterine Gorgodze on December 12, 2020. They defeated Spain’s Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov and Slovakian Kaja Juvan by 6-4-3-6-10-6 resulting in their triumph of the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge’s final. She won the earlier two titles at USD 25,000 level and this third title at USD 100,000 level.

Breakdancing has been added as an Official Sport For Paris 2024 Games

The International Olympic Committee has taken the decision to include breakdancing in its upcoming Paris 2024 games. The Olympics website has added a few new categories  for the next summer Olympics them being  breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing will be new categories

The World Squash Federation has elected its second female President.

England’s Zena Wooldridge has been elected as the WSF President. Wooldridge becomes only the second female President after Susie Simcock from New Zealand, since its inception in 1967. She will replace the outgoing President Jacques Fontaine who is from  France.

Madagascar will host the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games 

Madagascar has replaced Maldives to be the host of the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) due to coronavirus concerns. IOIG is a multi-sport tournament for sportspersons from the Islands of the Indian Ocean. The nations participating in the IOG  are Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Madagascar, Réunion  Mayotte, and the Maldives.

Marina Arzamasova, an ex-800m world champion has been handed a four-year doping ban

An out-of-competition sample that was provided by  Belarusian Marina Arzamasova in 2019 was found to contain LGD-4033, also known as ligandrol which has been banned by the Canada-based World Anti-Doping Agency. Ligandrol is used to treat conditions such as muscle wasting and osteoporosis.

FIFA has confirmed that the 2021 Club World Cup will now be held in Japan 

Japan will be hosting the  2021 Club World Cup in an existing seven-team format. Initially, A revamped 24-team competition was due to be held in China in 2021, but that has been postponed as of now. The tournament usually includes only seven teams- the six continental champions and the winner of the host nation’s domestic division.

Virat Kohli became the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs

Indian Men's Cricket Team Captain Virat Kohli became the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs, breaking a record held by Tendulkar.

Key Point:

  •  Kohli reached the milestone during a match against Australia.
  •  He touched the figure in his 242nd innings, while  Sachin Tendulkar  had taken 300 games to reach the milestone
  • Kohli is also the recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award of 2018.
