MEA has launched Global Pravasi Rishta Portal and mobile app to connect with Indian diaspora globally

Global Pravasi Rishta Portal and application has been launched by the Ministry of External Affairs to bring together and connect about 3.12 crore Indians from all across the world. The application aims at establishing a three-way communication between the Indian Missions, Ministry, and the Indian Diaspora. The Indian Diaspora plays an important role in decision making in the country of their resistance, and also play a crucial role in the economic development of India, by sending remunerations. It is essential to be able to get them on board in India’s success story.

PM Modi releases Rs. 18,000 crore under PM-KISAN scheme

The Prime Minister has released Rs. 18000 crore as the 7th installment to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi. Under the PM-Kisan Scheme, the government provides the farmer with Rs.6000 every year, in 3 installments. This scheme is applicable for both the small and the marginal farmers. The objective of t this scheme is to enhance the source of income for the farmers and to ensure that they have the required financial needs to ensure better crop yields and health of the crop.


E-Sampada web and a mobile app has been launched

A novel web portal and mobile app have been launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The app is to enhance transparency and accountability and at the same time ensuring ease of living for the citizens of India. The app has been launched on the 25th of December, to honor the former Prime minister of India, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose birthday is celebrated as Good Governance Day. The application will promote e-governance, by bolstering transparency and accountability in various estate services like regularization, retention, allotment, and no due certificate

The standing committee on Home Affairs has released “Management of COVID-19 pandemic and related issues”

The standing committee on Home Affairs, has recently released its report ‘Management of COVID-19 pandemic and related issues’. In this, the standing committee has highlighted the need of a national database of migrant workers. The said database should contain details of the source State, the destination State, the skill set of the worker, and other contact details. The report also sought to review the ancient and obsolete Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897.

Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the setting up of a new National Security Directives

A new National Security Directive on the telecommunication sector has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security. Its objective is to classify the telecom products and their sources under the ‘trusted’ and ‘non-trusted’ categories. The decision will be based on the approval of the National Security Committee on Telecom.  The Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) shall head it. The National Cyber Security Coordinator is the designated authority, and is expected to devise the methodology to specify trusted products.

The Ministry of Sports has recognized Yoga as a competitive sport

The Sports Ministry and the Ministry of AYUSH have formally recognized Yogasana as a competitive sport. This recognition shall enable Yogasana to receive government funding. The step aims at encouraging yoga and spreading awareness regarding the benefits of yoga among the people. The ancient practice of Yogasana helps to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has recently launched the External Affairs Ministry's Economic Diplomacy website. The objective of the website is to showcase the economic strengths, along with sectoral and state-wise strengths of India. This shall render it easier to garner better economic partnerships. The website shall serve as a two-way funnel by connecting national and state businesses globally to encourage exports, create employment opportunities, and at the same time attracting foreign industries and business to India.

The Election Commission planning on introducing have postal voting introduced for NRIs 

The Election Commission is planning on introducing postal voting introduced for NRIs. It has named the countries where it would want to introduce the proposal on a  on a pilot basis which includes United States, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Germany, France, and South Africa. The EC has proposed that any NRI interested in voting through the postal ballot in an election will have to inform the Returning Officer (RO) within five days after the notification of the election. Once their information is received, the RO will dispatch the ballot paper electronically.

Government has established protocols to manage adverse reactions caused by Corona vaccine
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has  informed on that the protocols have been established to look after  any form of adverse reactions, which may be severe, minor or serious, to the corona vaccine.  It is  admitted that there always exists a  possibility of an adverse reaction after immunization. These protocols include mandatory 30 minutes on site monitoring of the people, post vaccination. Each states and UTs must set up at least one AEFI- Adverse Event Following Immunization centre in each block.

Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has released the first phase of the 2019-20 NFHS-5 data

 The National Family Health Survey 5 is a large-scale multi-round survey, which is conducted in a representative sample of the households throughout India. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India, and the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai were responsible for the survey. The four key indicators of  this survey are child stunting, child waste, the proportion of underweight children, and child mortality. The data collected by these indicators are utilized in the calculation of multiple global indexes, such as the Global Hunger Index.

MGNREGA has helped in the creation of Ice Hockey Infrastructure in the UT of Ladakh.

Centrally sponsored, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment  Guarantee Act 2005, under the Ministry Of Rural Development, Government Of India has helped in the creation of  3 Ice Hockey Rinks at village level in the Union Territory of Ladakh, which has hosted the world's highest altitude women's hockey tournament. Two Ice Hockey Rinks have been constructed under the Special Development Package. The village switch got Ice Skating Rink are: Stongday, Sapi, Purtikchey, Bodh Kharbu.

Indian Railways has launched The Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).

The Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) is yet another major IT initiative by the Railways in order to prioritize the well-being of its workforce. It is developed by Indian Railways in coordination with RailTel Corporation Limited.  It is expected to provide a single-window of clearance of the hospital administration activities such as clinical, diagnostics, pharmacy, examinations, and industrial health.

Draft of Indian Ports Bill 2020 is being circulated for public consultation.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has circulated a draft of the Indian Ports Bill 2020, which will repeal and replace the Indian Ports Act, 1908, for public consultation. The Bill aims to create an enabling environment for the growth and the sustained development of the ports, Constitution of Maritime Port Regulatory Authority, Formulation of the National Port policy, Formulation of specialized Adjudicatory Tribunals namely Maritime Ports Tribunal and Maritime Ports Appellate Tribunal.

NITI Aayog has released ‘Vision 2035: Public Health Surveillance in India’, to strengthen Public Health Surveillance (PHS).

NITI Aayog has released the vision document to provide impetus to  Public Health Services in India by 2035 through the integration of 3 tier public health system into Ayushman Bharat. PHS will be based on individuals' Electronic Health Records(EHR), which will be collected using unique health identifiers.

126th Amendment bill passed  to extend SC-ST reservation quota

Parliament has recently passed a Constitution amendment bill that extends the quota to the  SCs and STs in LokSabha and state assemblies by another 10 years. The Government has also asserted that the Central government shall never stop the reservation system. The Cabinet has also revoked the provision for the nomination of Anglo-Indians to the LokSabha and the 14 state Assemblies.

New Insolvency And Bankruptcy Code Amendment Bill, 2019

The Union Government, Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the New Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Amendment Bill, 2019, to make it easier. During the moratorium period for the corporate debtors, the licenses, permits, concessions, and clearances cannot be terminated or suspended.  Cabinet has also approved the Partial Credit Guarantee Scheme for the purchase of the high-rated pooled assets from the  financially sound non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Handicraft and GI Toys have been exempted from the Quality Control Order

 Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the  Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has mentioned the exemption of  Handicraft and the Geographical Indications toys from Quality Control Order under  Toys (Quality Control) Second Amendment Order, 2020.

NSDC partners with BYJU's to train and upskill the teachers

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), as part of the Skill India Mission, has joined hands with the major ed-tech company Byju Raveendran’s BYJU’s to bolster teacher training, and upskilling of the education providers by giving them free access to its educational content and tools.

The Ministry of External Affairs has announced for the Lotus Emblem on the Passport is the symbol is our national flower and was part of the enhanced security features to in order to identify the fake passports. The security features have been introduced in tandem with the guidelines of the  International Civil Aviation Organisation. The MEA has announced that the measure shall involve the use of other national symbols as well on rotation.

 NITI Aayog has partnered with WCF to Empower Children and Youth on Cyber Safety Education

WNS Cares Foundation(WCF), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of WNS partnered with Atal Tinkering Labs(ATL),  under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) by NITI Aayog, to empower youth with knowledge on cyber safety and digital education through its platform CyberSmart. It shall be launched in more than 6500 schools across India.

The Union Cabinet has approved the provision of a Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) Scheme.

Under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) Scheme, which has been approved by the Central Government,  the Mobile Coverage in the state Arunachal Pradesh, and two Districts Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao of Assam shall be provided under the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan (CTDP) for the  North Eastern Region (NER). This project envisages providing mobile coverage to about 2 thousands of uncovered villages in 5 years.

Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana(ABRY) has been approved 

The Union Cabinet has approved an outlay of Rs 22,810 crore for Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana to provide impetus to job creation. The Government of India shall contribute to the Employers Provident Fund on behalf of both the employee and the employer for two years, for the recruitments made between October 1st, 2020 this year, and June 30, 2021. ABRY will be important during the recovery phase of  Atmanirbhar Bharat Package 3.0.

CII has launched the ‘Digital Saksham’

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched the ‘Digital Saksham’ in association with Mastercard’s Centre for Inclusive Growth and Hyderabad based ni-MSME, under the Ministry of MSME for more than 3 lakhs MSMEs across India. It is a comprehensive program designed to provide impetus to the competitiveness of MSMEs through digital know-how and acceptance.

5th India Water Impact Summit (IWIS) has been inaugurated

5th India Water Impact Summit, held from Dec 10 to 15 was organized by National Mission for Clean Ganga and the Center for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga). The Theme was based on the concept of "Arth Ganga", river conservation synchronized development. It was inaugurated by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Jal Shakti. 

'Fitness Ka Dose Aadha Ghanta Roz' campaign has been applauded globally

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju had launched the 'Fitness Ka Dose Aadha Ghanta Roz'  campaign as part of the nation-wide Fit India Movement that has been recognized and applauded by the World Health Organization.  Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research(CIMR), which falls under the ambit of the Ministry of AYUSH in association with  All India Institute of  Medical Science has planned to set up a Department of Integrative Medicine which shall be located at AlIMS, with an integrated protocol for bringing together Ayurveda and Yoga for the study on possible Post COVID treatment.

New Parliament Building under Central Vista Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid down the foundation stone for the construction of the new Parliament, which is to be completed in time to commemorate India’s 75th Independence Day. The planned structure is a four-storied New Parliament Building and is to be built in an area of 64500 sq. m. The estimated cost of the project is ₹971 Crore.

MoRTH has signed an MoU with Austria on Technology Cooperation 

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Austria on cooperation in the field of Technology in the Road Infrastructure Sector. ‘PM-WANI’ gets cabinet approval

The Union Cabinet has given approval to the setting up of public Wi-Fi networks all across India, as a part of  Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) in order to provide impetus to wireless connectivity.WiFi networks shall be provided through the public data offices (PDOs) and they do not require any license or registration fees. It was for the very first time recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in 2017.

Union Territory of Lakshadweep shall get optical fiber cable

The Union Cabinet of India has approved the laying of the undersea optical fiber cable funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund connecting  11 islands of the UT Lakshadweep with Kochi, in Kerala by May 2023. This is expected to provide impetus to broadband connectivity in Lakshadweep by providing a large bandwidth. This shall play a vital role in the delivery of e-governance services, development of fisheries, coconut-based industries, tourism, educational, and healthcare development.

    Vanchit Ikai Samooh aur Vargon ki Aarthik Sahayta (VISVAS) Yojana.

    Under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC) and  National Backward Classes Finance & Development Corporation (NBCFDC) have signed an  MoA With the Central Bank of India for implementation of Vanchit Ikai Samooh aur Vargon ki Aarthik Sahayta (VISVAS) Yojana. This is an Interest subvention Scheme for the financial empowerment of the economically marginalized OBC/SC Self Help Groups (SHGs) & Individuals.

    Draft Guidelines for the floating structures has been issued

    The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has come up with the draft guidelines for the technical specifications of the floating structures for public consultation. The vision is to deploy world-class floating infrastructure all along the coastline.

    SJVN has signed an  MoU with IREDA for Green Energy Projects

     Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd is a  Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Power which has signed an MoU with Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) which also is a PSU under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. This MoU has been signed to by IREDA to provide its services to SJVN for Green Energy projects.

    ICAR’s IISS has been conferred the  King Bhumibol Award for the  World Soil Day 2020 

    Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Indian Institute of Soil Science which is based in Bhopal was awarded the King Bhumibol World Soil Day 2020 Award, named after King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand,  by the Food and Agricultural Organisation in an attempt to acknowledge its contribution to 'Soil health awareness'.

    PNGRB has notified a new tariff structure for 14 natural gas pipelines. 

    The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has notified a renovated tariff structure for 14 natural gas pipelines. The objective of this tariff system is to reduce the cost of natural gas for the consumers who reside further away from the sources of natural gas and LNG terminals on the western coast of India by charging a fixed tariff within 300 km, and a fixed transport rate beyond 300 km on a single pipeline.

    The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has standardized all the health policies to incorporate robotic and bariatric surgeries - that are performed to lose weight by making changes to the digestive system.     The Health Ministry of India has created an online data pool on of doctors, nurses, other health care professionals. The data pool also contains names of volunteers from National Yuva Kendras and NCC,  Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, and ex-Servicemen. This  repository shall be used by the ground level administration at state, district, or municipal levels

    AYUSH Export Promotion Council is to be set up 

     Ministry of Commerce in association with the  Industry and Ministry of AYUSH is to set up the AYUSH Export Promotion Council. It has also been decided that the entire AYUSH sector will work in tandem to achieve the price and quality competitiveness to boost AYUSH exports. The view is shared by Officials from Ministry of Commerce & Industry, RIS, BIS & Invest India & AYUSH industry shared their view

    The Ministry of Textiles has invited proposals to constitute a dedicated export promotion council for technical textiles.

    The Exporter associations and the trade bodies which are registered under the Companies Act or Society Registration Act can submit proposals for the dedicated export promotion council by the 15th of December. The National Technical Textiles Mission was set up in February by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, with a four-year implementation period. The proposed council is to be a part of the same.

    The Government has notified compulsory surgical procedures for PG students studying Ayurveda.

    Ayurveda has two surgery branches- Shalya Tantra referring to general surgery, and Shalakya Tantra pertaining to the surgeries of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, and teeth. All Ayurveda Postgraduate students have to study these courses, and some of them specialize in these to become Ayurveda surgeons. According to the new regulations, the postgraduate should train themselves and perform 58 surgical procedures, which are already a part of the curriculum,  independently. This will allow the patients to know for sure the Ayurvedic doctor’s capability and skill set, thus establishing objectivity.

    Green Charcoal Hackathon' has been launched to reduce the carbon footprint

    Union Minister RK Singh has launched the 'Green Charcoal Hackathon'. The objective of the hackathon is to create a conducive environment by reducing carbon emissions by nurturing technology solutions. The aim is to achieve clean air by eliminating stubble burning and to produce energy from agricultural wastes. This event was launched by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam.

    Finance Minister has unveiled the 'Smuggling In India Report 2019-20'

    Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India has released the Smuggling in India Report 2019-20. This report analyses the trends of organized smuggling of Gold, Foreign Currency, and Narcotic Drugs. It has detected 412 cases of smuggling & seizure of contraband worth ₹1,949 cr in the year 2020. The unveiling was a part of the inauguration of the 63rd Founding Day Celebration of the Dept of Revenue Intel.

    Minister of Science and Technology Dr. HarshVardhan has virtually inaugurated the 2nd The Cancer Genome Atlas ( TCGA )2020 conference in New Delhi. The Cancer Genome Atlas is a joint effort between the USA based  National Cancer Institute and the National Human Genome Research. TCGA has generated over 2.5 petabytes of genomic data

    Education Ministry set up a task force for preparing a roadmap on imparting technical education in the mother tongue.

    The government of India has constituted a High-level Ministerial Committee for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

    Mission COVID Suraksha

    The Government of India has announced the stimulus package of Rs. 900 crore for the Mission COVID Suraksha, the Indian Covid-19 Vaccine Development Mission, which can help the event process of the vaccine candidates.

    Key Points

    • Phase-I of the Mission has been allotted Rs. 900 Crore which has been allotted for a period of 12 months.
    • The grant will be provided to the Department of Biotechnology for Research and Development (R&D) of Indian Covid-19 vaccines.

    Mission Objectives:

    • Mission COVID Suraksha is India’s targeted effort to enable the development of indigenous, affordable, and accessible vaccines for the country and will complement the ongoing mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
    • Accelerating pre-clinical and clinical development along with establishing clinical trial sites.
    • Licensure of Covid-19 vaccine candidates that are currently in clinical stages or able to enter the clinical stage of development.
    • Strengthening the prevailing central laboratories and suitable facilities for animal studies, production facilities, and other testing facilities to support vaccine development.
    • Supporting common harmonized protocols, data management systems, training, regulatory submissions, internal and external quality management systems, and accreditations.
    • Supporting the capabilities for the process development, cell line development, and manufacturing of GMP batches for animal toxicology studies and clinical trials.
