Suneet Sharma becomes the new Chairman & CEO of Railway Board

The appointments committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Suneet Sharma as the new Chairman & CEO of Railway Board, on December 31. He replaced V.K. Yadav. He earlier worked as General Manger of Eastern Railway. Mr. Sharma joined the Indian Railways in 1979 as a Special Class Apprentice while he was studying at IIT Kanpur. He is serving in the Indian Railways for more than 40 years in various capacities.

V.K. Yadav conferred with Eminent Engineer Award, 2020

The Chairman & CEO of Railway Board, Vinod Kumar Yadav has been bestowed with the prestigious “Eminent Engineer Award for the year 2020” on December 31. This award was given for his outstanding contribution towards modernization and reforms over Indian Railways by the Institution of Engineering  And Technology (IET).

The IET is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution established in 1871. It has over 168,000 members  in more than 150 countries and hence is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions.

ISRO Chairman K Sivan gets one- year extension

The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisaton (ISRO) and Secretary of the Department of Space, K Sivan has been given one year extension and will continue his position till January 14, 2022 or until further orders. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet, on December 30, said that the tenure of Sivan will be extended for one year.  Sivan has made many significant contributions towards end-to-end mission planning, design, integration and analysis.

Dalai Lama's last surviving bodyguard dies in Minnesota

Anen Dawa, the last surviving personal bodyguard of Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama dies in Minnestoa, US at the age of 83.  Anen escorted him during the 1959 escape of India. The report on exile Tibetan govenment's official site further says that he died peacefully with his family by his side. Dawa was only 15 when he joined the personal army of Dalai Lama in Nornulingka, Tibet.

Virat Kohli wins the 'Player of The Decade', MS Dhoni is the winner of 'Spirit of Cricket' Award

Famous Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli, on December 28, was in news as he won Sir Garfield Sobers Award for the best male cricketer of the decade. He was also honoured with the ODI Cricketer of the Decade award. Further, former Indian Cricketer MS Dhoni won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a run out in the Test match in 2011.

Dance Historian Sunil Kothari passes away

Eminent dance historian and critic Sunil Kothari on Sunday, December 27, passed away at a private hospital in Delhi. He was tested positive for coronavirus a month ago, and was recovering slowly. But, on Sunday morning, he  was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Kothari was born in Mumbai on December 20, 1933 and was a qualified Chartered Accountant before turning to the study of Indian Dance forms. The Padma Shri award, the Gaurav Puraskar and many other prestigious titles were bestowed upon him in his dancing career.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the Player of the Century

One of the best football players, Cristiano Ronaldo, have won the Player of the Century award on Sunday, December 26 at the Globe Soccer Award in Dubai. Whereas, Pep Guardiola was selected as the Coach of the Century during a ceremony held at Armani Hotel. Ronaldo have won league titles in England, Spain and Italy and is currently playing for Juventus. He has also won Champion League title five times.

Legendary Urdu Poet Shamsur Rahman Faruqi dies on Friday

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, renowned urdu poet passed away on Friday at his Allahabad home. He recovered from Covid-19 and was discharged on November, 23 after being tested negative. His books "Mirror of Beauty" ( English translation of "Kai Chaand The Sar-e- Aasmaan"), "Ghalib Afsaney ki Himayat mein" and "The Sun that rose from the Earth" are among his pieces of work. The Padma Shri award is also among his achievements from his five- decade- long literature career.

PM Narendra Modi, on 22nd December 2020, was awarded the 'Legion of Merit’, one of America’s highest military honours, by the U.S. President Donald Trumph for his role in advancing the India-U.S. relationship.  India’s ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu accepted the award of behalf of Mr. Modi from U.S. NSA Robert O’Brien at the White House.

Vineet Agarwal becomes new president of ASSOCHAM

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has appointed Managing director of Logistics Major Transportation Company of India Limited, Vineet Agarwal as the new President. He replaced Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, MD and co-founder of Hiranandani Group of Companies. Agarwal is not only one of the youngest industry captains to be appointed as the president of an apex chambers of commerce, but also the founding National President of the Young Leader Council at the All India Management Association (AIMA).

Ratan Tata honoured with “Global Visionary of Sustainable Business and Peace” title by FIICC

On December 21, the Federation of Indo-Israel Chambers of Commerce (FIICC), honoured Veteran industrialist Ratan Naval Tata with “Global Visionary of Sustainable Business and Peace” title for promoting unity, peace and sustainability.  Ratan Tata, being the most respected and ethical businessman of India, has received many awards including, Padma Vibhushan in 2008 for Trade and Industry and Padma Bhushan in 2000 for Trade and Industry.

Amar Singh College Receives ‘Award of Merit’

On 16th December, 2020, Amar Singh College of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, received the ‘Award of Merit’ in the 2020 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. It is the first international award given to a cultural heritage in Kashmir. Amar Singh College was one of the seven winners of 2020.

Amar Singh College’s  restoration is one of the most prominent institutional buildings in Kashmir. It is built nearly  80 years ago.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati elected as the Vice- president of the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union

The CEO of Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekar Vempati, on December 16, was elected as the Vice- President of Asia- Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), one of the largest broadcasting associations in the world. This news was stated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.  

Vempati worked with IT major Infosys and was the head of an online media firm before taking up the position as the CEO of Prasar Bharati. This is another achievement for him.

Jairam Ramesh and debutant author Amit Ahuja, on December 10, were declared as joint winners of the third edition of the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay-NIF Book Prize for the best non fiction book on modern India. Amit Ahuja was awarded for his Mobilizing the Marginalized: Ethnic Parties without Ethnic Movements whereas, Jairam Ramesh was awarded for his A Chequered Brilliance: The Many Lives of VK Krisna Menon.

Nirmala Sitharaman ranked 41st in Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women 2020 list

Union Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman has secured 41st rank in the list of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women 2020. This makes her the most powerful Indian women as per the Forbes’ list of 2020. German Chancellor, Angela Mekerel has been ranked 1st in the list followed by Christine Lagarde (European Central Bank President) and Kamala Harris (US Vice-President elect). The list also includes HCL CEO, Roshni Nadar Malhotra at 55th rank and Biocon Chief, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw at 68th place.

Raj Kamal Jha awarded with Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize 2020

Indian author-journalist, Raj Kamal Jha has been awarded the Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize 2020 for his novel ‘The City and The Sea’ based on the ‘Nirbhaya Case’. He will receive prize money of $ 5,000 along with a statuette of Rabindra Nath Tagore. Peter Bundalo is the founder of the Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize. The announcement was made virtually from Copenhagen, Denmark.‘The City and The Sea’ is published by Peter Bundalo Publication. Nirmala Govindarajan’s Taboo, Ranjeet Hoskote’s Jonhawhale and Amitabh Ghosh’s Gun Island were also shortlisted for the literary prize.

Shree Anindya Banerjee appointed as India's next ambassador to Korea

Shree Anindya Banerejee has been appointed as the India's next ambassador to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by the Ministry of External Affairs. He is the present Assistant High Commissioner in Assistant High Commission of India, Chittagong, Bangladesh. He will succeed Atul M Gotsurve and assume the post shortly.

Dr. Vivek Murthy becomes the Surgeon General of United States of America

Dr.Vivek Murthy has been appointed as the Surgeon General by the US President-elect Joe Biden. He is an Indian-American Doctor, who also served as a member of the advisory group on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health in 2011. He founded ‘Doctors for Obama’ (later renamed as Doctors for America) to support the presidency campaign of former US President, Barack Obama. He was the Surgeon General of United States from 2014 to 2017 under Obama’s Presidency. He has over 20 years of experience as research scientist and physician.

Anil Soni becomes the 1st CEO of WHO Foundation

Anil Soni has been appointed as the 1st Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of World Health Organization (WHO) Foundation. He is an Indian-origin global health expert from New York with 20 years of experienxe in Global Health Sector. He will assume the charge from 1st January, 2021. He has also served as the Head of Global Infectious Diseases at Vitaris and as the CEO of Clinton Health Access Initiative. He was the Founding Executive Director of Friends of the Global Fight in 2004-05 and was the Senior Advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Jehan Daruvala wins Formula 2 race

Indian Racer, Jehan Daruvala has become the 1st Indian to win a Formula-2 race by finishing at the 1st place in the Sakhir Grand Prix held at Bahrain. 22-year old, Jehan emerged as the winner of the thrilling battle against F2 champions Mick Schumacher and Daniel Ticktum in the support race of ending-season of Formula 1 Grand Prix. Jehan Daruwala  is a racer of the Red Bull Racing Team.

Malvika Hegde becomes the new CEO of Coffee Day Global Ltd.

Malvika Hegde has been appointed as the new CEO of Coffee Day Global Ltd. She was serving as the Director of the same company. She has been appointed after the death of her husband and the founder of Coffee Day Global Ltd, Late V G Siddhartha. Malvika Hegde is the daughter of former External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna. Coffee Day Global Ltd. is the company that manages India’s largest coffee retail chain ‘Café Coffee Day’.

Paul Sein Twa wins 2020 Goldman Environment Prize in Asia Region

Indigenous Karen activist, Paul Sein Twa of Myanmar has been awarded with the 2020 Goldman Environment Prize in Asia Region for leading the protest for the establishment of 1.35million acres Peace Park in 2018. The Goldman Environment Award is also known as the Green Nobel Prize. The peace park is named as Salween Peace Park as it is located on the Basin of Salween River in Myanmar’s eastern frontier with Thailand. The Salween Peace Park is an important biodiversity rich area which is collectively managed by 350 indigenous communities who have their ancestral lands within the perimeters of the Salween Peace Park.

Adar Poonawalla named among the ‘Asians of the Year’

CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), Adar Poonawalla has been named as one of the 6 ‘Asians of the Year’ by ‘The Strait Times’ for his contribution in fighting COVID-19 pandemic. Serum Institute of India (SII) is a Pune-based firm that has collaborated with the University of Oxford and the UK and Sweden based pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca for the development of COVID-19 vaccine named as ‘Covidshield’ which is at trial stage in India. The Strait Times is a Singapore’s leading daily newspaper agency. The other 5 ‘Asians of the Year’ are- Zhang Yongzhen and Maj-Gen Chen Wei of China, Dr. Ryuichi Morishita of Japan, Ooi Eng Eong of Singapore and Seo Jung-jin of South Korea.

Radhakrishnan Nair appointed as Chief Coach of Athletics Federation of India

Radhkrishnan Nair has been appointed as the Chief Coach of Athletics Federation of India (AFI). He will succeed Bahadur Singh who resigned from the post in July. Nair was currently serving as the Acting-Chief Coach of Indian Athletics. 62 year old Radhakrishnan Nair is the first Indian to receive International Coaching Enrichment Certificate from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He is a World Athletics Level-5 Coach and a certified Technical Official. His appointment was endorsed by Sports Authority of India (SAI)

Ranjitsinh Disale wins Global Teacher Prize 2020

Ranjitsinh Disale of Maharashtra has won the Global Teacher Prize 2020 for initiating the Quick Response (QR) coded interactive textbooks in India and transforming the life of young school girls. He is currently serving as a Teacher in Zila Parishad Primary School, Paritewadi of Solapur district in Maharashtra. He has won a cash prize of US $1 million. Global Teacher Prize was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Varkey Foundation. Global Teacher Prize is given to the teachers across the world for their outstanding contribution to the teaching profession. The prize was founded by Varkey Foundation in 2014.

Uday Shankar becomes FICCI President

Uday Shankar has been appointed as the President of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for 2020-21. He will succeed Sangitha Reddy to become the first individual from the media and entertainment industry to be appointed as the President of FICCI. Uday Shankar is currently serving as the President of The Walt Disney Company for Asia Pacific and the Chairman of Star and Disney India. He is the man behind the creation of Disney+Hotstar. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya has been appointed as the 1st Vice President of World Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (WLPGA). He is currently serving as the Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). WLPGA is an international authority that represents the global LPG value chain. WLPGA headquarters is located at Paris, France and Henry Cubbon is its President. Shrikant is the current Director of the Board of Petronet LNG and is also the Chairman of Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd.   • In an interview with Actress Angelina Jolie, Gitanjali talked about the way she puts technology to use against issues ranging from water contamination to opioid addiction and cyberbullying
  • She provides an AI-based service called ‘Kindly’.

Roshni Nadar named as India’s richest woman in the Kotak Wealth – Hurun: Leading Wealthy Women 2020 list

Roshni Nadar Malhotra of Hindustan Computer Limited-Tech (HCL-Tech) has been named as India’s richest woman in the 2nd edition of Kotak Wealth- Hurun: Leading Wealthy Women 2020 list. The list has been jointly launched by Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Kotak Wealth Management section and Hurun India.  32-year-old Roshni Nadar topped the list with a total wealth of Rs. 54,850 crores followed by Biocon Limited’s Chairperson and Managing Director, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw with a total wealth of Rs. 36,600 crores. Kiran is India’s wealthiest self-made woman.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati the owner & CEO of iconic spice masala brand MDH - Mahashian Di Hatti, passed away on 3rd December 2020.

  • Dharampal Gulati started with a small shop in Karol Bagh,
  •  He built MDH as one of India's leading spices brand.
  •  Mahashay Dharampal Gulati officially established his company, MDH in 1959.
  • Gulati became the highest-paid CEO of an FMCG co. in India in the year 2017.
