Suneet Sharma becomes the new Chairman & CEO of Railway Board
The appointments committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Suneet Sharma as the new Chairman & CEO of Railway Board, on December 31. He replaced V.K. Yadav. He earlier worked as General Manger of Eastern Railway. Mr. Sharma joined the Indian Railways in 1979 as a Special Class Apprentice while he was studying at IIT Kanpur. He is serving in the Indian Railways for more than 40 years in various capacities.

The Chairman & CEO of Railway Board, Vinod Kumar Yadav has been bestowed with the prestigious “Eminent Engineer Award for the year 2020” on December 31. This award was given for his outstanding contribution towards modernization and reforms over Indian Railways by the Institution of Engineering And Technology (IET).
The IET is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution established in 1871. It has over 168,000 members in more than 150 countries and hence is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions.

ISRO Chairman K Sivan gets one- year extension
The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisaton (ISRO) and Secretary of the Department of Space, K Sivan has been given one year extension and will continue his position till January 14, 2022 or until further orders. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet, on December 30, said that the tenure of Sivan will be extended for one year. Sivan has made many significant contributions towards end-to-end mission planning, design, integration and analysis.

Dalai Lama's last surviving bodyguard dies in Minnesota
Anen Dawa, the last surviving personal bodyguard of Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama dies in Minnestoa, US at the age of 83. Anen escorted him during the 1959 escape of India. The report on exile Tibetan govenment's official site Tibet.net. further says that he died peacefully with his family by his side. Dawa was only 15 when he joined the personal army of Dalai Lama in Nornulingka, Tibet.
Virat Kohli wins the 'Player of The Decade', MS Dhoni is the winner of 'Spirit of Cricket' Award
Famous Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli, on December 28, was in news as he won Sir Garfield Sobers Award for the best male cricketer of the decade. He was also honoured with the ODI Cricketer of the Decade award. Further, former Indian Cricketer MS Dhoni won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a run out in the Test match in 2011.

Dance Historian Sunil Kothari passes away
Eminent dance historian and critic Sunil Kothari on Sunday, December 27, passed away at a private hospital in Delhi. He was tested positive for coronavirus a month ago, and was recovering slowly. But, on Sunday morning, he was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Kothari was born in Mumbai on December 20, 1933 and was a qualified Chartered Accountant before turning to the study of Indian Dance forms. The Padma Shri award, the Gaurav Puraskar and many other prestigious titles were bestowed upon him in his dancing career.
Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the Player of the Century
One of the best football players, Cristiano Ronaldo, have won the Player of the Century award on Sunday, December 26 at the Globe Soccer Award in Dubai. Whereas, Pep Guardiola was selected as the Coach of the Century during a ceremony held at Armani Hotel. Ronaldo have won league titles in England, Spain and Italy and is currently playing for Juventus. He has also won Champion League title five times.

Legendary Urdu Poet Shamsur Rahman Faruqi dies on Friday
Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, renowned urdu poet passed away on Friday at his Allahabad home. He recovered from Covid-19 and was discharged on November, 23 after being tested negative. His books "Mirror of Beauty" ( English translation of "Kai Chaand The Sar-e- Aasmaan"), "Ghalib Afsaney ki Himayat mein" and "The Sun that rose from the Earth" are among his pieces of work. The Padma Shri award is also among his achievements from his five- decade- long literature career.

On December 21, the Federation of Indo-Israel Chambers of Commerce (FIICC), honoured Veteran industrialist Ratan Naval Tata with “Global Visionary of Sustainable Business and Peace” title for promoting unity, peace and sustainability. Amar Singh College Receives ‘Award of Merit’
On 16th December, 2020, Amar Singh College of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, received the ‘Award of Merit’ in the 2020 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. It is the first international award given to a cultural heritage in Kashmir. Amar Singh College was one of the seven winners of 2020.
Amar Singh College’s restoration is one of the most prominent institutional buildings in Kashmir. It is built nearly 80 years ago.
Shashi Shekhar Vempati elected as the Vice- president of the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union
The CEO of Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekar Vempati, on December 16, was elected as the Vice- President of Asia- Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), one of the largest broadcasting associations in the world. This news was stated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Vempati worked with IT major Infosys and was the head of an online media firm before taking up the position as the CEO of Prasar Bharati. This is another achievement for him.

Union Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman has secured 41st rank in the list of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women 2020. This makes her the most powerful Indian women as per the Forbes’ list of 2020. German Chancellor, Angela Mekerel has been ranked 1st in the list followed by Christine Lagarde (European Central Bank President) and Kamala Harris (US Vice-President elect). The list also includes HCL CEO, Roshni Nadar Malhotra at 55th rank and Biocon Chief, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw at 68th place.
Raj Kamal Jha awarded with Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize 2020
Indian author-journalist, Raj Kamal Jha has been awarded the Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize 2020 for his novel ‘The City and The Sea’ based on the ‘Nirbhaya Case’. He will receive prize money of $ 5,000 along with a statuette of Rabindra Nath Tagore. Peter Bundalo is the founder of the Rabindra Nath Tagore Literary Prize. The announcement was made virtually from Copenhagen, Denmark.‘The City and The Sea’ is published by Peter Bundalo Publication. Nirmala Govindarajan’s Taboo, Ranjeet Hoskote’s Jonhawhale and Amitabh Ghosh’s Gun Island were also shortlisted for the literary prize.
Shree Anindya Banerjee appointed as India's next ambassador to Korea
Shree Anindya Banerejee has been appointed as the India's next ambassador to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea by the Ministry of External Affairs. Indian Racer, Jehan Daruvala has become the 1st Indian to win a Formula-2 race by finishing at the 1st place in the Sakhir Grand Prix held at Bahrain. 22-year old, Jehan emerged as the winner of the thrilling battle against F2 champions Mick Schumacher and Daniel Ticktum in the support race of ending-season of Formula 1 Grand Prix. Paul Sein Twa wins 2020 Goldman Environment Prize in Asia Region
Indigenous Karen activist, Paul Sein Twa of Myanmar has been awarded with the 2020 Goldman Environment Prize in Asia Region for leading the protest for the establishment of 1.35million acres Peace Park in 2018. The Goldman Environment Award is also known as the Green Nobel Prize. The peace park is named as Salween Peace Park as it is located on the Basin of Salween River in Myanmar’s eastern frontier with Thailand. The Salween Peace Park is an important biodiversity rich area which is collectively managed by 350 indigenous communities who have their ancestral lands within the perimeters of the Salween Peace Park.

Radhakrishnan Nair appointed as Chief Coach of Athletics Federation of India
Radhkrishnan Nair has been appointed as the Chief Coach of Athletics Federation of India (AFI). He will succeed Bahadur Singh who resigned from the post in July. Nair was currently serving as the Acting-Chief Coach of Indian Athletics. 62 year old Radhakrishnan Nair is the first Indian to receive International Coaching Enrichment Certificate from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Ranjitsinh Disale wins Global Teacher Prize 2020
Ranjitsinh Disale of Maharashtra has won the Global Teacher Prize 2020 for initiating the Quick Response (QR) coded interactive textbooks in India and transforming the life of young school girls. He is currently serving as a Teacher in Zila Parishad Primary School, Paritewadi of Solapur district in Maharashtra. He has won a cash prize of US $1 million. Global Teacher Prize was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Varkey Foundation. Global Teacher Prize is given to the teachers across the world for their outstanding contribution to the teaching profession. The prize was founded by Varkey Foundation in 2014.
