Sadiq al-Mahdi, Former Prime Minister of Sudan has passed away

Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi has succumbed to coronavirus infection. Al-Mahdi was Sudan’s last democratically elected Prime Minister. He was overthrown in the year 1989 in the military coup, which had brought the former President Omar al-Bashir to power.

Sudeep Tyagi, a fast bowler from UP has taken retirement.

Sudeep Tyagi, who had played for the Indian national cricket team in four ODIs and 1 T20 as a fast bowler, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The UP pacer was in the Chennai Super Kings team for the IPL. He has played 42 first-class matches and has picked up 109 wickets. In List A he has featured in 23 matches and has taken 31 wickets.

  • Tarun Gogoi served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016.
  • He led the Indian National Congress party to victory in 3 consecutive state elections in Assam.
  • Tarun was the longest serving CM of Assam after he completed his 15 years as CM in May 2016.
  • He was elected as the Joint Secretary of All India Congress Committee in 1976.
  • He also served as the General Secretary of AICC from 1980 to 1990.
  • He was the Union Minister of State OF Ministry of Food and Food Processing from 1991 to 1996 under the cabinet of PV Narasimha Rao.
  • He died due to multiple-organ failures after getting tested positive for COVID-19 in August 2020.

Indian Wildlife Expert, Ajay Adrushyappa Desai passed away due to cardiac arrest on 20th November 2020 at Belgaum, Karnataka at an age of 63. He was also known as ‘Elephant Man’ for his specialization on species-specific behavior of wild elephants in wildlife conflicts with human being.

  • He was born in 1957 in Konnur, Bagalkot in Karnataka.
  • He started his career in Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) as a Researcher.
  • His research mainly focused on elephant herding and formation of tracks.

3-year old Tamil Nadu student, Vinisha Umashankar has won the 5th edition of Children’s Climate Prize for designing solar-powered ironing cart. The solar-powered cart powers a steam iron box with the help of roof-mounted solar panels.

  • The award was presented virtually by Isabella Lovin, Minister of Environment and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden.
  • Vinisha will be given a diploma, medal and cash award of 8.64 lakh (after conversion from Sweden Krona)
  • Vinisha is currently studying in 9th grade in Tiruvannamalai District of Tamil Nadu. She has also won the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award 2019 and has also been shortlisted for Rashtriya Bak Shakti Puraskar 2021 (Highest civilian award for any minor of India)
  • The battery of the solar powered cart will be charged completely within 5 hours by the solar panels that will produce 250 watts per hour.

17-year old Bangladeshi teenager, Sadat Rahman has won the International Children’s Peace Prize 2020 on 13th November 2020. He received the prize for setting up a social organization and mobile application ‘Cyber Teens’ for preventing cyber bullying.

  • The award was presented by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai at the event held in Netherlands.
  • International Children’s Peace Prize is given every year to the children who have made remarkable efforts to safeguard the rights of the vulnerable children.
  • International Children’s Peace Prize was given in 2005 for the first time.
  • The prize is given by KidsRights, which is an Amsterdam based international children’s rights organization.

Bahrain’s Prime Minister passes away at 84

Bahrain’s Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman al Khalifa passed away at the age of 84 on 11th November 2020. He was the World’s longest serving Prime Minister. He was the first Prime Minister of Bahrain since its independence in 1971.

  • Salman al Khalifa was born on 24th November 1935 at Jarsa, Bahrain.
  • He was the PM of Bahrain for nearly 3 decades.

Kamala Harris becomes the  new Vice-President of USA

Kamala Devi Harris has been elected as the new Vice-President of United States of America (USA). She will be replacing Mike Pence. She belongs to the Democratic political party, which won the US presidential elections with 290 electoral votes. She will be assuming the post of the Vice-President from 20th January 2021.

Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha has been appointed as the new Chief Information Commissioner of India (CIC). He will succeed Bimal Julka after his tenure was over in August 2020.  He will be the head of the Central Information Commission.

  • Y K Sinha was shortlisted as the new CIC by a 3 member committee headed by PM Narendra Modi. The other members were Amit Shah and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Indian diplomat, Vidisha Maitra has been elected to the 5th Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) of the United Nations. She will join the committee from 1st January, 2021.

Key Highlights-

  • Vidisha Maitra was elected as the member of the Committee by 126 votes in support against 64 in opposition of her candidature.
  • Vidisha Maitra is currently posted as the First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India to UN in New York.
  • The ACABQ is a subsidiary of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and it consists of 16 members.
  • India attained the member of ACABQ in the year 1946.
  • ACABQ advises the Assembly on budgetary and administrative matters referred to it among the others and examines the budget submitted by the UN Secretary-General to the General Assembly.

A K Singh becomes the new CMD of Petronet LNG Ltd.

Akshay Kumar Singh has become the new Chief Managing Director (CMD) of Petronet LNG Ltd. after Prabhat Singh who retired in August 2020 after his tenure of 5 years. He was elected by the board of directors in a meeting held on 4th November 2020.

Key Highlights-

  •  A K Singh was serving as the director India Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) from 2018 before his new appointment.
  • He has more than 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.
  • Petronet LNG Ltd. is the largest importer of gas in India.
  • It is a joint venture of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
  • AK Singh has also served as Executive Director of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).
