Rich Asian Nations to recover faster in the Post-pandemic world, says the UNDP, ADB and ESCAP Report
As per the joint report of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), the richer countries in Asia-Pacific will recover at a faster rate from the pandemic as compared to the poorer countries as a result of difference between the countries in healthcare systems and vaccination process. The report has been titled as ‘Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic: Leaving no Country Behind’. The economic disparity between the Asian nations will lead to an uneven economic recovery in the Asia-Pacific region.

Indian Ads promote Gender Stereotypes, says UNICEF’s study
As per the study released by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and The Geena Davis Institute (GDI) on Gender in Media, Indian advertisements highly promote gender stereotypes even though the women in the ads are prominent. The study has been titled as ‘Gender Bias & Inclusion in Advertising in India’. The study reveals that women are rarely featured in public spaces and paid employment conditions. As per the study, women dominate screen and speaking time by 59.7 % and 56.3 % respectively. The study has been also supported by India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA).

India finishes at 87th place in the Global Energy Transition Index 2021
India has been ranked 87th among 115 countries in the Global Energy Transition Index 2021. Sweden has secured the 1st position with 79 points followed by Norway (77) and Denmark (76). India’s Index score was 53. India’s rank was 74th in the last year’s index. The Global Energy Transition Index has been released under the ‘Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2021’ Report by World Economic Forum (WEF) in collaboration with Accenture. The Index has been prepared on the basis of readiness for transition to a secure, affordable, sustainable and reliable energy future.
Amrita Vidyapeetham becomes the only Indian university to be listed in World Top 100 for Sustainability
Tamil Nadu-based Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has become the only Indian university to get listed in THE (Times Higher Education) Impact Ranking 2021: World Top 100 for Sustainability. Amrita Vidyapeetham was ranked 81st in the global rankings. University of Manchester (UK) topped the global ranking followed by University of Sydney (Australia) and RMIT University (Australia). The ranking was prepared on the basis of compliance of the universities with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) listed by United Nations (UN).

India ranked 142nd in the World Press Freedom Index 2021
India has been ranked 142nd among 180 nations in the World Freedom Index 2021. The Index has been published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and international non-profit journalism organization. Norway was placed at the topmost position followed by Finland and Denmark. India’s rank was the same in the previous year’s index. With the current rankings, India remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the journalists. The report revealed that the authoritarian regimes of the Asia-Pacific region have used the ongoing pandemic to gain a tight grip on the broadcasting of information.
Key Findings of UNFPA’s State of World Population 2021
The State of World Population 2021 released by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been titled as ‘My Body is My Own’. It is for the 1st time that UNFPA has released a report focusing on bodily autonomy. As per the report, only 55 % of the women in the world are fully empowered to make their choices over their body. The report has also revealed that only 75 % of the countries ensure legal access to contraception. As per the report 80 % of the countries have laws supporting wellbeing of the females.

Cyclone ‘Amphan’ caused economic losses worth US $ 14 billion to India, says the WMO Report
As per the findings of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Report, The Cyclone ‘Amphan’ of May, 2020 that hit India-Bangladesh border caused economic losses worth US $ 14 billion to India. Amphan was the costliest tropical cyclone till date in the North Indian Ocean. The cyclone displaced 2.4 million Indians (mostly from Odisha and West Bengal) and 2.5 million Bangladeshi citizens. The report also revealed that 2020 was one of the three warmest years till date.
Global CO2 emissions to reach 33 million tonnes in 2021, says the Global Energy Review 2021
In accordance with ‘Global Energy Review 2021’ the Global Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions is set to reach 33 billion tones in 2021. It is around 4.6% more (approx 1.5 billion tonnes) as compared to the previous year. It is the 2nd largest spike in the Global CO2 emissions till date since2010.The spike is the result of rise in demands of coal. The report has been released by International Energy Agency (IEA). The review also said that the electricity from renewable sources of energy will account for 30 % of the total electricity generation. Electricity demand is also set to increase by 4.5 % in the current year.

Key findings of the 2021 Global Food Policy Report
As per the 2021 Global Food Policy Report, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected half of the Indian population below poverty level and has made them deprived of nutritious food. The report has been published by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFRI). As per the report, the pandemic will have long-lasting effects on the health of the poor. The report revealed that there has been a record 66.7 % growth of the e-food services as many people changed the means of food purchase in the lockdown.
National Climate Vulnerability Assessment declares 8 eastern states as ‘highly vulnerable’ to climate change
As per the National Climate Vulnerability Assessment report, 8 states of East India are highly vulnerable to climate change. The report has been titled as ‘Climate Vulnerability Assessment for Adaptation Planning in India Using a Common Framework’ and it has been released by the Department of Science and Technology. The 8 highly vulnerable states are West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Mizoram and Jharkhand. The report has also mentioned that occurrence of extreme climatic events will be more in number and will get more severe in the coming years.

India finishes 49th in the Inclusive Internet Index 2021
India has been ranked 49th among 120 countries in the Inclusive Internet Index 2021. Sweden has been ranked 1st in the Index followed United States, Spain, Australia and Hong Kong. The Index report has prepared by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in collaboration with Facebook. Thailand also shares the 49th rank with India. The Index scores have been calculated on the basis of Readiness, Relevance, Affordability and Availability. India’s internet user base is expected to become 1 billion by 2025 from 687.6 million in 2020.

2021 Best Countries Report places Canada at the top
As per the 2021 Best Countries Report, Canada is the best country overall in the world. Japan finished 2nd in the rankings followed by Germany and Switzerland. The Report has been prepared by US News & World Report, BAV Group, VMLY&R and Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. A total of 78 nations were included in the rankings. Canada has occupied the 1st place for the first time. This year’s report had two more categories, Social Purpose and Agility apart from the usual categories.

Key findings of NSO Report for March 2021
As per the Report of National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, India’s Retail Inflation has reached its 4-month high to 5.52 % due to the increment in the rates of food items in the month of March. The report also reveals that the Core Inflation has reached its 29-month high to 5.96 %, which was 3.95 % in 2020. The Fuel Inflation Rate has increased to 4.94 %. As per the NSO data, Fuel and Light Inflation Rate has increased to 4.5 % whereas the Services Inflation rose to 6.88 %.

Key Findings of AWRU Rankings 2020
As per the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) 2020, Harvard University of USA has been placed at the 1st position followed by Stanford University (USA) and University of Cambridge (UK). Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has been ranked as the best institute for higher education in India whereas Calcutta University has been ranked as the best University in India. The ranking has been released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy so the ranking is also called as Shanghai Rankings.

India’s Debt-to-GDP Ratio increased from 74 % to 90 % due to COVID-19, says IMF Report
As per the report released by International Monetary Fund (IMF), India’s Debt-to-GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has increased from 74 % in April, 2020 to 90 % in March, 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The baseline forecast of IMF says that the Debt-to-GDP ratio of India will decrease to 80 % sue to the speedy recovery of Indian economy. Based on the findings of the report, IMF suggests Indian Government should support the most vulnerable sections of the Indian society during the pandemic.

Jeff Bezos tops the 2021 Forbes’ Annual Billionaires List
Founder of Amazon.com Inc, Jeff Bezos has been placed at the top in the 35th edition of Forbes’ Annual Billionaires List. Jeff Bezos is followed by founder of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk and Facebook’s co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg. Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani has been ranked at the 10th place. Jeff Bezos has been placed at the top for the fourth consecutive year. Founder of Ali Baba, Jack Ma dropped to the 26th rank. Gautam Adani has been named as the second richest India by the Forbes’.
Banks to see 10 % rise in Gross NPAs by the end of FY22, says the ICRA Report
As per the report released by Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency (ICRA), banks will see a rise of 10 % in Gross Non- Performing Assets (GNPAs) by 31st March, 2021. The reason behind this is restructuring of loans under ‘Overdue’ category by the customers. The scenario is likely to occur also due to the opting of moratoriums. The sharp rise in GNPAs will degrade the asset quality of the banks spread over FY21 and FY22.

India retains the top spot in real-time digital payments in 2020, says the ACI Worldwide Report
As per the report released by ACI Worldwide and GlobalData, India has retained the top position in terms of real-time digital transactions in 2020. India’s total digital transaction volume was 25.5 billion followed by China (15.7 billion), South Korea (6 Billion), Thailand and UK. The report revealed that 71.7 % of the transactions in India will be carried out digitally by 2025 and cash or cheque payments will account for just 28.3 %. The global volume of real-time transactions in 2020 was 70.3 billion.

India ranks 140th in WEF’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021
The Global Gender Gap Report 2021 has been released by World Economic Forum (WEF) to track the progress in the gender gap. As per the report Iceland has been ranked at the 1st place for the 12th consecutive year. Finland has been placed at the 2nd spot followed by Norway, New Zealand, Rwanda, Sweden, Ireland and Switzerland. India has been ranked 140th among 156 nations. India has slipped 28 spots in a year and has now become the 3rd worst country in South Asia in terms of Gender equality.
