Singapore secures 1st rank in the Asia-Pacific Personalized Health Index 2020

As per the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)-Asia-Pacific Personalized Health Index 2020, Singapore secured the 1st rank among the 11 Asia-Pacific nations. The report has been prepared by the Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies in collaboration with Roche. India has been placed at the 10th position with an index score of 36. Taiwan and Japan secured the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively. Indonesia has been placed at the bottom. The 11 Asia-Pacific countries are – India, China, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

Gist of Global Climate Litigation Report: 2020 status review

The ‘Global Climate Litigation Report: 2020 Status Review’ has been prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with Sabin Center for Climate Change Law of Columbia University. The report reveals that there has been an increase in number of climate litigation cased from past few years. As per the report of 2017, there were 884 climate litigation cases across 24 nations which doubled to 1550 across 39 countries in 2020. The report reveals that most of the climate litigation cases are from the high income countries whereas the recent cases are from South Africa, India, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines and Columbia.

Findings of People’s Climate Report

People’s Climate Report has been released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is the world’s largest survey of public opinion on climate change that surveyed around 1.2 million people. The report says that around 64 % of the total surveyed candidates believe that climate change is a global emergency. The global survey was jointly conducted by University of Oxford and UNDP in 50 countries covering 56 % of the global population. The report says that around 54 % candidates supported conservation of forest and land whereas 50 % of them supported investments in green business.

Over 39 billion in-school meals were missed by the schools across the globe during COVID-19 closure, says UNICEF Report

According to the ‘COVID-19: Missing More Than a Classroom. The Impact of school closures on children’s nutrition’ Report, over 39 billion in-school meals were missed by the schools across the world during the COVID-19 closures. The report was jointly prepared by World Food Programme and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Office of Research-Innocenti. As per the report around 100 million schools in India, 48 million in Brazil, 44 million in China and 9 million schools each in South Africa and Nigeria could not feed the children due to the pandemic. School-feeding programme in India is run by the name of Mid-Day Meals Scheme which reduced the children calorie-deficiency by 30 %.

India slips to 86th spot in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2020

India has been ranked 86th in the Corruption Perception Index 2020 with a score of 40 out of 100. India was at the 80th position with a score of 41 in 2019. As per the report, New Zealand and Denmark have secured the 1st rank with a score of 88 out of 100 followed by Finland, Switzerland and Singapore. Somalia and South Sudan have been placed at the bottom (179th) with a score of 12. The rankings have been prepared on the basis of assessments of 13 experts, surveys of business executives and levels of corruption in public sector.

Findings of the India Justice Report 2020

The India Justice Report 2020 has been released by Tata Trusts in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)- Prayas & Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, DAKSH, Centre for Social Justice. As per the report, Maharashtra has secured the 1st rank among the large and mid-size states with a score of 5.77 followed by Tamil Nadu and Telangana with a score of 5.73 and 5.64 respectively. Tripura ranked 1st in among the small states with a score of 4.57 followed by Sikkim and Goa with a score of 4.48 and 4.42 respectively.

India secures 7th rank in the Global Climate Risk Index 2021

As per the 16th edition of ‘Global Climate Risk Index 2021- Who Suffers Most from Extreme Weather Events, Weather-related Loss Events in 2019 and 2000 to 2019’ India has been placed at the 7th position which was 5th in the previous year. Mozambique has topped among the 10 countries facing severe climatic risks followed by Zimbabwe and Bahamas. The Global Climate Risk Index is the list of top 10 worst-hit countries due to extreme weather events in 2019 and 2000-2019. As per the Global Climate Risk Index 2000-2019, Puerto Rico secured the 1st rank followed by Myanmar and Haiti; India got the 20th rank.

Indian billionaires got wealthier by 35 % during the lockdown, says Oxfam Report

As per the Indian supplement of ‘The Inequality Virus’, released by Oxfam India, the wealth of top 100 Indian billionaires increased by 35 % to Rs. 12,97,822 crores during the worldwide lockdown. The Oxfam’s ‘Inequality Virus Report’ was unveiled on the opening day of Davos Dialogues of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The report also revealed that, Indian billionaires became 90 % wealthier since 2009. India has been placed at the 6th position in the list of countries where billionaires became wealthier during the lockdown. USA topped the list followed by China, Germany, Russia and France.

UNU-INWEH releases Report on Ageing Dams in the World

Ageing Water Storage Infrastructure: An Emerging Global Risk’ Report has been released by the Institute for Water, Environment & Health, United Nations University (UNU-INWEH). The report emphasizes that the ageing large capacity dams are an issue of global development as they pose threats to the environment and human safety. As per the report, 10,000 dams across the globe have exceeded or reached the ‘alert’ age limit of 50 years and many dams are 100 years old. The report also revealed that, around 32,716 large dams accounting for 55 % of the total dams in the world are in 4 countries- India, China, Japan and South Korea.

India ranked 4th in the Global Firepower Nations Index 2021

As per the Global Firepower Nations Index 2021 – Military Strength Ranking, India has been ranked 4th among 138 modern military nations. USA has secured the 1st rank in the Index with a PwrIndx (Power Index) rating of 0.0721 followed by Russia and China with a PwrIndx rating of 0.0796 and 0.0858 respectively. India’s score was 0.1214 followed by Japan with a score of 0.1435. The rankings also reveal that Asia has topped in the regional firepower ranking followed by Asia-Pacific, Middle East and European Union.

Findings of Asia and the Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2020 Report

The ‘Asia and the Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2020: Maternal and Child diets at the Heart of improving nutrition’ Report has been released by the United Nations (UN). As per the report, the number of people facing food insecurity at severe level is estimated to become two-fold (double) to 265 million due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The report has been jointly prepared by World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

NITI Aayog releases the India Innovation Index 2020

National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has released the 2nd edition of the India Innovation Index. As per the Index, Karnataka has topped among 17 Major States followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala. Among the 9 Union Territories, Delhi secured the 1st rank followed by Chandigarh, Daman & Diu, Puducherry and Goa. Himachal Pradesh has been placed at the 1st position among the 10 North-Eastern and Hilly States followed by Uttarakhand, Manipur, Sikkim, and Mizoram. The India Innovation Index is the relative performance of the States and Union Territories divided into several categories on the basis of 36 key indicators.

Gist of WEF’s Global Risks Report 2021

The 16th edition of Global Risks Report has been released by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The report has been prepared on the basis of the Global Risks Perception Survey (GRPS) conducted on over 650 members of WEF’s Leadership Communities. As per the report, there is a clear and present risk of fallout of infectious, livelihood diseases and extreme weather events in the next 2 years. The report says that there is risk of knock-on and cumulative effects of the breakdown of IT infrastructure in the next 5 years. The report also revealed that there might be existential threats to mankind due to weapons of mass destruction in the next 10 years.

Gist of ‘Working from Home from Invisibility to Decent Work’ Report

‘Working from Home from Invisibility to Decent Work’ Report has been prepared by International Labour Organization (ILO). As per the report, there were 260 million home-based workers in 2019 accounting for 7.9 % of the Global employment and 56 % of them were women.  The report reveals that the propensity of women to work from home was 11.5 % as compared to 5.6 % in men. The report also reveals that the home-based workers earn 50 % less in Argentina, India and Mexico; 25 % less in South Africa; 22 % less in USA and 13 % less in the United Kingdom. The Report emphasized on the need to adopt Global Labour Standards and improve National Level Registries for home-based workers.

Indians make the world’s largest trans-national community, says the International Migration 2020 Report

As per the International Migration 2020 – Highlights Report, people of Indian-origin make the greatest proportion in the global pool of international migrants, making it the world’s largest trans-national community. The report has been published by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The report reveals that India is followed by Mexico and Russia with 11 million trans-national individuals each. The reports also highlight that USA and UAE are the nations with most number of immigrants from India. At present USA hosts around 3.5 million people of Indian-origin whereas UAE hosts 2.7 million individuals of Indian origin.

Findings of the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2020

As per the 5th edition of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Adaptation Gap Report released on 14th January,  the annual cost of adaptation to the effects of climate change to the developing countries will quadruple (become 4 times) by 2050. The report has been jointly prepared by UNEP DTU Partnership and the World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP). The report reveals that there is a huge gap in financing the actions for fulfilling the requirements of the Paris Agreement and the gap is even more in case of the developing nations of Asia and Africa.

India gets 85th rank in the Henley Passport Index

India has been placed at the 85th position in the Henley Passport Index: Q1 2021 Global Ranking along with Tajikistan. The Henley Passport Index shows the most powerful passports in the world on the basis of visa-free scores. Japan secured the 1st rank in the Index with a visa-free score of 191 followed by Singapore and Germany & South Korea with visa-free scores of 190 and 189 respectively. Visa-free score tells us about the number of countries where an individual can visit without a prior visa by using the passport of the country to which he belongs.

India ranks 10th in the 2020 Hurun Global 500 List

India has been ranked 10th in the 2020 Hurun Global 500 List that includes 500 most valuable companies of the world. The list has been released by Hurun Research and Rupert Hoogewerf is the Chairman and Chief Researcher of the organization. As per the report, USA has secured the 1st rank with 242 companies in the list followed by China and Japan with 51 and 30 companies respectively. Only 11 firms from India have made it to the list. India’s Reliance Industries has been placed at the 54th position with a valuation of US $168.8 billion.

Gists of the Management Effectiveness Evaluation Report 2018-19 of the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries

The Management Effectiveness Evaluation Report 2018-19 of the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries across India was released by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javedkar. As per the report, Great Himalayan National Park and Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary of Himachal Pradesh scored the highest among 146 National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries respectively. The report has been prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India as a framework for testing the effectiveness of the management authorities of the protected areas across India. The report revealed that the overall score of India was 62.01 % which higher the global average score of 56 %.   

Gross NPAs of Banks may rise by September- 2021, says the Financial Stability Report

As per the Financial Stability Report (FSR) 2021, the Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPAs) may rise to 13.5 % by September, 2021. The 22nd edition of FSR has been prepared by the Reserve Bank of India. 22nd FSR is a bi-annual report based on the Macro-Stress Tests of RBI that covers the first 6 months (April-September) of the Financial Year (FY) 2020-21. The report reveals that GNPA of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) may rise to 16.2 % whereas the GNPA of Private Banks may rise to 7.9 % by September, 2021.

India secures 4th rank in the Digital Evolution Scorecard 2020

India has been placed at the 4th position in the 3rd edition of the Digital Evolution Scorecard. The Digital Evolution Scorecard has been prepared by the Fletcher School of Tuft’s University in collaboration with Mastercard. China has secured the 1st place in the Scorecard followed by Azerbaijan and Indonesia. The scorecard revealed that mobile internet connectivity has doubled in India in the last 4 years. The scorecard also revealed that 350 million smartphones will be added in the Indian market by the end of 2023.

National Statistics Office releases the 1st edition of Advance Estimates of GDP Report

National Statistical Office (NSO) released the Advance Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP for 2020-21 Report on 7th January. NSO is administered by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. As per the report, India’s GDP will contract by 7.7 % in the Financial Year (FY) 2020-21 due to the ongoing pandemic. The report is based on 6 key indicators and it reveals that the Real GDP or GDP at the Constant Prices is estimated to be INR 134.40 Lakh crores in 2020-21 which was INR 145.66 Lakh crores in 2019-20.

Jeff Bezos shines in the Chronicle’s List of the Biggest Charitable Donations of 2020

As per the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Annual list of Top Donations of 2020, Jeff Bezos has made the single-largest charitable donation in 2020. He donated $ 10 billion for launching Bezos Earth Fund that helps the Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) in fighting climate change. The Chronicle’s List of Biggest Charitable Donations is based on 10 largest publicly announced donations. Nike co-founder, Phil Knight and his wife have been placed at the 2nd position for making a $ 900.7 million donation to Knight Foundation.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan releases the 1st edition of LASI Wave-1 Report

Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan has released the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI) Wave-1 Report 2020. It is the world’s largest full-scale survey on elderly people that aims to provide basic data for designing state level and national level welfare policies and programmes for the elderly individuals i.e. people above 60 years of age. As per the report, the elderly population of Andhra Pradesh has the maximum prevalence (66.4 %) of low vision whereas the ageing population of Uttar Pradesh has the highest prevalence of blindness. The report also revealed that older adults (above 45) of Chhattisgarh have high prevalence of undernutrition and on the contrary the older adult population of Chandigarh showed the maximum prevalence of overnutrition (obesity).

Indian Economy to grow at 5.4 % in FY 2021-22, says GEP-January 2021 Report

As per the Global Economic Prospects (GEP) –January 2021 Report, the Indian economy is expected to grow at a rate of 5.4 % in the Financial Year (FY) 2021-22. The Semi-annual report has been prepared by the World Bank that reflects the condition of the world economy. The report also revealed that India’s GDP will grow at a rate of 5.2 % in the FY 2022-23. According to the report, the Global Economy will grow at 4 % in FY 2021-22. Indian Economy contracted at a rate of 9.6% in the FY 2020-21.

As per the List, Ambani is the richest man of Asia for the second consecutive year. According to the list, founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos is the richest man of the world with a net worth of $ 201 billion. Founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk secured the 2nd position with a net worth of $ 145 billion followed by the head of Louis Vuitton SE, Bernanrd Arnault and Microsoft Co-founder, Bill Gates.

Shanshan replaces Ambani as Asia’s Richest Man, says Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2021

As per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2021, Zhong Shanshan has become the richest man of Asia by replacing the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Ltd., Mukesh Ambani. Mukesh Ambani has been ranked 12th in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2021 with a net worth of US $ 76.7 billion. Zhong has been placed above Ambani with a net worth of US $ 78.2 billion. As per the Index, Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man with a net worth of US $ 190 billion followed by Elon Musk and Bill Gates.
