Key findings CWUR’s World University Rankings 2021-22
World University Rankings have been released by Centre for World University Ranking (CWUR). As per the rankings, Harvard University has topped in the world followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University of USA .Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmadabad topped among the Indian universities followed by Indian Institute Science (IISc) Bengaluru and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. Jadavpur University has been placed at the 18th position among Indian higher educational institutions in the CWUR rankings. Indicators like research performance, quality of faculty, alumni employment and quality of education.

Key findings of RBI Annual Report 2020-21
As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Annual Report 2020-21, the value of bank frauds decreased by 25 % in the fiscal year of 2020-21 whereas the number of bank frauds decreased by 15 %. The report also report also revealed that the income of RBI’s Annual Account decreased by 10.96 % (from INR 149,672 crores to INR 133,272 crores) whereas the total expenditure decreased by 63.10 % (from INR 92,540 crores to INR 34,146 crores). RBI’s gains from foreign exchange (forex) increased by 69 % (from INR 29,993 crores to INR 50,629 crores)

Key findings of ‘Protected Planet Report 2020’
The biennial ‘Protected Planet Report 2020’ has been released by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report reveals that around 21 million square kilometers of area across the world has been added to the Protected & Conserved Areas since 2010. The report reveals the status of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 set during the 2010 Convention on Biological Diversity conference. The report says that around 42 % of the protected areas have been added during 2010 and 2020.

Conor McGregor ranks 1st in the Forbes’ World’s 10 Highest-paid Athletes 2021
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) legend, Conor McGregor has topped the Forbes’ World’s 10 Highest-paid Athletes 2021 with a total earning of USD 180 million. Lionel Messi secured the 2nd position with USD 130 million followed by Christiano Ronaldo (USD 120 million) and Dark Prescott (USD 107.5 million). As per Forbes’, this is the 1st time that the top 4 athletes have crossed the USD 100 million mark. LeBron James, Christiano Ronaldo and Roger Federer have been present in this list for 10 years.
Key findings of IDMC’s ‘2021 GRID’ Report
The ‘2021 Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID): Internal displacement in a changing climate’ has been released by Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). The report revealed that 55 million people across the world got displaced internally by the end of 2020, which is the highest in 10 years. The number of internally displaced people was the highest in China followed by Philippines and Bangladesh. India recorded the highest levels of internal displacement due to disasters in South Asia and also at global level.

Key findings of ‘State of Working India 2021: One Year of COVID-19’
The ‘State of Working India 2021: One Year of COVID-19’ Report has been released by the Centre of Sustainable Employment (CSE) of the Azim Premji University in Bengaluru, Karnataka. As per the report, the monthly earnings of the workers have decreased by 17 % during the pandemic. Informally salaried and self-employed workers were the most severely hit by the lockdown and the pandemic. The report also revealed that around 100 million people lost their jobs across India during the lockdown of April-May, 2020.
India, China and South Africa perform better in import-export during the 1st Quarter of 2021, says UNCTAD Report
As per the ‘Global Trade Update’ (May 2021), South Africa, China and India have performed relatively better than the other leading economies in terms of imports and exports in the 1st quarter of 2021. India’s imports grew by 45 % and exports increased by 26 % in the Q1 of 2021 as compared to 2020. The global trade of goods and services has increased by 10 % every year. The overall forecast for 2021 indicates a global trade growth of 16 %. The report has been released by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Key findings of IEA’s ‘Net Zero by 2050’ Report
International Energy Agency (IEA) has released ‘Net Zero by 2050’ Report. The report says that halting new gas, oil and coalfields will be a key in achieving Net Zero Global Carbon emissions by 2050. The report also revealed that energy investment needs to increase to US $ 5 trillion a year by 2030 from US $ 2 trillion at present for achieving net zero emissions. The report also says that the share of electric vehicles in the global fleet should increase from 5 % to 60 % by 2030.
Key findings of WWF’s ‘Over 100 Years of Snow Leopard Research’ Report
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has released the ‘Over 100 Years of Snow Leopard Research’ Report. The report says that more than 70 % of the habitats of Snow Leopards spread across 12 Asian countries are still under-researched. As per the data mentioned in the report, only 23 % of their habitat covering 1.7 million sq. Km has been explored. Around 70 % of the research has been carried out in Nepal followed by India (40 %), Uzbekistan (39 %), China and Russia. The report has been prepared on the basis of peer reviewed papers.

India is the second largest insurance-tech market in Asia-Pacific, says the S&P Global Report
As per S&P Global Market Intelligence Report, India is currently the second largest insurance technology market in the Asia-Pacific region. Indian insurance-tech market accounts for 35 % of the venture capital coming to this sector. The market size of Insurance-tech in Asia-Pacific region is around $ 3.66 billion. At present, around 335 private insurance-tech firms are operational in Asia-Pacific region. The report reveals that China and India together account for half of the private insurance-tech firms in the APAC region.

Key findings of the State of Indian Healthcare Report
As per the ‘State of Indian Healthcare- Indian Cities Through The Lens Of Healthcare 2021’ Report, Pune has topped among the 8 urban cities of India in terms of health infrastructure followed by Ahmadabad and Bengaluru. The ranking has been prepared on the basis of parameters like local body performance, water quality, ease of living and number of hospital beds. Delhi-NCR was ranked last (8th) among the urban cities. Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) ranked 4th followed by Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. The report reveals that India has the lowest number of doctors (0.86 per 1,000 people) as compared to the other economies (2-4 doctors per 1000 people). The report has been released by Housing.com.

Most cities vulnerable to environmental risks are in India, says report of Verisk Maplecroft
As per the report released by Verisk Maplecroft, out of the 100 cities that are most vulnerable to environmental risks, 43 were from India. As per the report, a total of 414 cities inhabiting 1.5 billion people are at a high risk from pollution and other environmental hazards. The report also revealed that 99 out of 100 most vulnerable cities are from Asia with 37 cities from China. Indonesia’s Capital city, Jakarta topped the list of vulnerable cities with combined risks of all nine factors analyzed by the research firm.
India adds 12.1 GW of power generation capacity in 2021, says the CEEW-CEF Report
As per the Annual Issue of ‘Market Handbook 2020-21’ released by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water-Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF), India has added 12.1 Gigawatt (GW) power generation capacity in 2020-21. Out of 12.1 GW, 7.7 Gigawatt was generated from renewable sources of energy and 3.9 GW from coal/lignite. Renewable Energy accounts for 10.1 % of the overall energy sector in 2021 which was 9.4 % in 2020. India aims to achieve 175 GW of renewable energy generation by the end of 2022.
World Food Price Index reaches the all-time high since May, 2014, says the FAO Report
As per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Food Price Index has increased in April and has averaged to 120.9 points which is 2 points higher than that of March, 2021. The rise in the index points marks the monthly rise for the 11th consecutive time and has reached the all-time high since May, 2014. The rise in April’s Food Price Index was led by the hike in the prices of sugar, oils, meat, dairy, cereals etc. The Food Price Index is a measure of monthly rise and fall of global prices of food items.

India tops in receiving remittances in 2020, says the World Bank Report
As per the ‘Resilience COVID-19 Crisis Through a Migration Lens’ Report released by World Bank, India received a total of US $ 83 billion as remittances in 2020 and has topped in the list of Low and Medium Income Countries with most of the remittance inflows. China holds the 2nd spot following India as its received US $ 59.5 billion followed by Mexico with US $ 42.8 billion. A total of US $ 540 billion was remitted to the Low and Medium Income Countries in 2020 which is just 1.6 % less as compared to 2019.
Military exercises and civil unrest have threatened 219 endangered species, says the IUCN Report
As per the ‘Nature in a Globalised World: Conflict & Conservation’ Report, military exercises conducted by the armies of various nations and civil unrest in many countries are threatening 219 endangered species mentioned in the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. The report has been released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is the 1st edition of the report published by IUCN. The report has studied the close relation between armed conflicts and environment. The report says that human violence and civil unrest make the endangered species more vulnerable to extinction.

India’s renewable energy addition capacity decreased by 50 % in 2020, says IEA report
As per the ‘Renewable Energy Market Update- Outlook for 2021 and 2022’ India’s renewable energy capacity addition decreased by 50 % to 5.62 Giga watt (GW) in 2020 as compared to 2019. The report has been released by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The report also revealed that the reason behind the fall in the renewable energy capacity addition is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite of the pandemic, the global renewable energy capacity addition increased by 45 % to around 280 GW in 2020. China alone built 50 % of the total green energy projects in 2020.
Mastercard and NITI Aayog releases report on ‘Digitally Inclusive Bharat’
National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog in partnership with Mastercard and FTI Consulting released the ‘Connected Commerce: Creating a Roadmap for a Digitally Inclusive Bharat’. The report identifies the hurdles in accelerating digital financial inclusion in India and makes recommendations for making digital services more accessible to the citizens of India. NITI Aayog was the knowledge partner whereas FTI Consulting was the Research and Curation partner in the 5 round-table discussion on the basis of which the report was prepared. India has been ranked 49th among 120 nations in the ‘Inclusive Internet Index 2021’.

Reliance Retail is now the 2nd fastest growing retailer in the world, says Deloitte Report
As per the ‘2021 Ranking of Global retail powerhouses’ Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Retail Limited has become the 2nd fastest growing retailer in the world. It slipped from 1st position in 2020 to 2nd in 2021. South Korea-based Coupang is now the world’s fastest growing retailer. The ranking has been prepared by Deloitte. Reliance Retail Ltd recorded 41.8 % Year-on-Year (YoY) growth which was the result of increase in number of stores by 13.1 %. A total of 11,784 stores of consumer electronics, fashion and lifestyle and grocery retail chains form the retail network of Reliance.
India was the top exporter of LCVs and passenger cars to South Africa in 2020, says the AIEC Report
As per the ‘Automotive Export Manual 2021-South Africa’ Report, India was the top exporter of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and passenger cars to South Africa in 2020 despite worldwide lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. India alone accounted for 43.2 % (approx. 87,953 vehicles) of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and passenger cars imported by South Africa. The report was released by Automotive Industry Export Council (AIEC). The report revealed that most of the vehicles imported by South Africa fell in the entry-segment.

Highlights of the Global Methane Assessment 2021
The assessment was titled as ‘2021 Global Methane Assessment: Benefits and Costs of Mitigating Methane Emissions’. It was jointly released by Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report reveals that 45 % of human-induced methane emissions can be mitigated by the end of this decade. This will account for 0.3◦C rise in temperature due to Global Warming by the end of 2045. Mitigating methane emissions will bring the countries closer to achieving the standards set by the Paris Climate Agreement.

New Delhi ranks 32nd, Mumbai 36th in the Global Prime Residential Index Q1
As per the Global Prime Residential Index Q1, New Delhi and Mumbai have ranked at 32nd and 36th position respectively. Both the cities have moved down by 1 rank as compare to the last index rankings. Bengaluru slipped by 4 spots to 40th rank showing slight decline in India’s top property markets. China’s Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangzhou have been placed at the topmost positions in the index. The index rankings have been prepared by London-based property consultant, Knight Frank.
USA puts India on Priority Watch List, says the Special 301 Report
In accordance with the Special 301 Report, USA has put India along with 8 other nations on Priority Watch List for protection and enforcement of Intellectual Property (IP). The list includes 23 countries in total. The Special 301 Report was released by the United States Trade Representative that includes the countries which do not provide sufficient Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) to the American companies. The report reveals that India has been inconsistent in providing protection to the Intellectual Property holders like innovators. The other newly added countries are Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Venezuela, Ukraine, Russia, Indonesia and China.
Around 155 million people faced acute food insecurity in 2020, says the GNAFC Report
As per the 5th edition of ‘Global Report on Food Crises 2021’, at least 155 million people faced acute food insecurity in 2020 as a result of COVID-19, conflicts, extreme weather conditions and economic shocks. The number was around 20 million in 2019. Out of these 155 million people, 1,33,000 people needed urgent food to prevent widespread death from starvation. The report has been prepared by Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) that includes data from 55 countries that receive 97 % of the total humanitarian assistance.

India becomes the 3rd largest recipient of Global FDI in 2020, says the OECD data
As per the data released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), India is the 3rd largest recipient of Global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) following China and United States in 2020. The data revealed that China accounted for an FDI inflow of US $ 212 billion followed by USA with US $ 177 billion and India with US $ 34 billion. The data also revealed that the overall Global FDI declined by 38 % in 2020 making it reach its 15-year low.

19 % of Overall Retail Sales were made online in 2020, says the UNCTAD Report
As per the ‘Estimates of Global e-Commerce 2019 and preliminary assessment of COVID-19 impact on online retail 2020’, 19 % of the Overall Retail Sales were made through online shopping platforms in 2020. The report was released by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The report revealed that South Korea accounted for the highest 25.9 % of total online retail sales followed by China (24.9 %), Britain (23.3 %) and USA (14 %). The report revealed that Global e-Commerce reached US $ 26.7 trillion in 2019.
