South Korea hosts 2021 P4G Seoul Summit Global virtually

South Korea (Republic of Korea) hosted the 2021 P4G Seoul Summit virtually on 30th and 31st May, 2021. The inaugural ceremony of the summit was organized virtually in Dongadaemun Design Plaza, Seoul. The theme of the summit was ‘Green Recovery and 2050 Carbon Neutrality’. This is the 1st multi-lateral environmental summit to be hosted by South Korea. Representatives of USA, China and other major economies adopted the declaration at the end of the summit. President of South Korea, Moon-Jae proposed ‘Green New Deal’ aiming to support the nation in achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Gist of UN’s Climate Breakthroughs Summit 2021

The Climate Breakthroughs Summit was held virtually on May 27th, 2021. It was jointly organized by World Economic Forum (WEF), Mission Possible Partnership, UN Climate Champions and United Kingdom Climate Change Conference (COP26). The leaders discussed about the current status of the global economy including green hydrogen, steel, shipping and nature. United Nations (UN) has urged for a coordinated action to secure the global net-zero emissions for achieving the goal of limiting global warming to an increase of 1.5C by 2050 as compared to the pre-industrial levels.

China hosts the 4th BRICS Working Group Meeting 2021

The 4th edition of BRICS Working Group Meeting 2021 was hosted by China on 25th and 26th May, 2021. The meeting was organized by China National Centre for Biotechnology Development and sponsored by China’s Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The meeting held discussions on emerging issues in the field of biotechnology. India was represented by the Advisor & Head of International Cooperation Division under the Department of Science & Technology, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Varshney. Researchers and government officials from the member countries of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) attended the meeting.

Italy hosts the Global G20 Health Summit

Italy hosted the Global G20 Health Summit in collaboration with the European Commission. The agenda to overcome the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic was adopted in the summit. The summit came to a decision of developing and endorsing a Rome Declaration of Principles. The risk of more transmissible variants of COVID-19 was highlighted during the summit. The officials of World Health Organization say that the future of the pandemic lies in the hands of the leaders of G20 nations. The G20 association has also contributed to the ACT-Accelerator.

Health Minister of India chairs the 33rd Conference of Health Ministers of Commonwealth Countries

The 33rd Conference of Health Ministers of Commonwealth Countries was virtually chaired by India’s Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan. The theme of the conference was ‘Commonwealth Response to COVID-19: Ensuring Equitable Access to Vaccines and Building Resilience for Health Systems and Emergencies’. The conference was attended by the health ministers of the member states along with Patricia Scotland (Secretary-General of the Commonwealth) and Tedros Adhanom (Director-General of WHO). Harsh Vardhan talked about India’s aim to vaccinate the entire adult population of India by the end of 2021.

Summit on Financing of African Economies 2021 held in Paris

‘Summit on Financing of African Economies 2021’ was held on 18th May, 2021 in Paris, France. India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs, (V Muraleedharan). The summit was organized as a mix of in-person and virtual meeting. The aim of the summit was to arrange financial resources for the revival of the economies of African countries hit by COVID-19 pandemic. The nations of the African continent are on the verge of experiencing its 1st recession in 25 years.

India hosts the 1st BRICS Employment Working Group meeting virtually

India hosted the 1st edition of BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) meeting virtually. The meeting was scheduled on 11th and 13th May, 2021. The meeting was chaired by Secretary, Labour and Employment, Apurva Chandra from Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. Representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), International Social Security Agency (ISSA) and International Labour Organization (ILO) attended the meeting. The participants of the meeting discussed about participation of women in the labour force and the agendas promoting Social Security Agreements (SSA).

Highlights of the India-UK Virtual Summit 2021

The India-UK Virtual Summit was attended by the Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Boris Johnson. The virtual summit took place on 4th May, 2021. ‘Roadmap 2030’ was adopted by both the counterparts to elevate the bilateral ties between the nations to ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’. A total of 9 MoUs were signed between the countries. Both the nations agreed upon collaborated production of military hardware and technology for combat aircrafts. The partnership has paved way for deep engagements between the countries in the upcoming 10 years.
