Janaki Amma, The Nightingale Of South India Turns 85

Sistla Janaki is an Indian playback singer born on 23 April 1938, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Sistla Janaki is referred to respectfully as "Janaki Amma" and also as "Nightingale of South India".

Her childhood love for music turned out to be her talent, and she started performing at a tender age of three.

Starting in 1957, her career has spanned six decades. Janaki Amma has breathed life into 48,000 songs in 25 languages.

Apart from being creative singer, she was also a good lyricist and an eminent music composer during the prime of her career.

She is the only female singer alive today, who has sung in so many different voice modulations and languages.

Janaki Amma is the only non Malayali winning maximum number of awards in the Malayalam music industry.

In 2013, she declined to accept the Padma Bhushan award as she felt that the honour has come late for her.
