The History of Sandwiches Is Simple But Complicated

In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, invented the meal that changed dining forever.

The first recorded sandwich recipe dates back to 1762 and consists of salt beef served between slices of bread and butter.

Sandwiches became very popular in the American diet when bakeries started selling presliced bread during early 19th century.

The largest sandwich weighed 2,467.5 kg was made by Wild Woody's Chill and Grill, Roseville, Michigan, USA on 17 March 2005.

Sandwich is also a first convenience food that needs no utensils and can be eaten on the go.
