On 23 March, Thursday, a lower court in Ahmedabad sentenced opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail.

He has been charged with defamation charges for a 2019 speech in which he referred to thieves as having the surname Modi.

The court granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days, to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

The case was filed against Rahul Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

This could be a huge blow to Congress Party ahead of the 2024 general elections, which will be held early next year.

The judgment was passed by a magistrate's court in the city of Surat, located in Modi's home state of Gujarat.

Accused Rahul Gandhi is held guilty and sentenced to two years simple imprisonment by Harish Varma, the judge.

Congress spokesperson and top lawyer Abhishek Singhvi told a news conference that party feared Gandhi could be disqualified.
